So that you know who you can read something from once a month in future, I’d like to briefly introduce myself. My name is Sophia, although most people call me “Fia”. I’m 26 and come from what is probably the most triathlon-crazy county in the world, Roth! My mother is a great marathon runner and my father is a 15-time long-distance finisher. I think that explains where my enthusiasm for endurance sports and triathlon in particular comes from. You might think that I’ve been doing this sport since I was a child, but my “sporting career” hasn’t been quite so straightforward.
What has happened so far…
I actually took part in my first triathlon and running competitions at primary school age, but in my youth I was completely dedicated to dancing. After a few years, however, I had had enough of a sport in which you are always dependent on a dance partner and the judges’ assessment. I wanted to return to a sport where performance is more measurable, where the only thing that matters is the clock and where you are responsible for yourself.
And so I came back to triathlon in 2015 and completed my first Olympic distance. Many competitions followed over the next few years, some of them in the Bavarian regional league as part of a girls’ team. It was a great time, during which I learned a lot – especially how to really push myself in a race and how to spend as little time as possible in the transition zone.
New goals
However, after a while I realized that my strength lies more in longer distances and not so much in sprinting. Probably because I can show off my skills on the bike better there. That’s why I’ve mainly been competing in the middle distance since 2018. My highlight so far was my start at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Nice in 2019. I will (hopefully) be at the start line again in 2021. On the schedule so far:
- the classic in Buschhütten (OD),
- the Bavarian middle distance championship in Ingolstadt,
- my home race and favorite competition at Rothsee (OD),
- Challenge Roth relay with the aim of riding the 180km in under five hours,
- the cult race at the Allgäu Triathlon (MD)
- and last but not least the end of the season at the 70.3 in Barcelona
Of course, I realize that these goals are still up in the air and depend on the coronavirus situation. But it’s important to me, especially in the darker months of the year, to have fixed goals to train towards. I’m working with KickAss Sports to achieve these races and I’d be delighted if you could join me.
To be continued…
However, this blog is not just about race reports and training diaries, but above all about the special features, hurdles and requirements of training for female triathletes. I have been training according to my cycle for almost four months now and I would like to share these experiences with you. In this relatively short time, the KickAss Sports team has already imparted a lot of knowledge to me and given me lots of helpful tips. I’m sure that talking about a topic that is unfortunately still very rarely discussed will help us all move forward – making us healthier, more balanced and better athletes. From tracking tools and training tips to nutrition and delicious recipes, everything will be covered.
